Xbox and PS3 gamers who downloaded the "Death Magnetic" album will be able to play it in full-game mode. Users of Ps2 and Wii, however, will get "Broken Beat & Scarred", "Cyanide" and "My Apocalypse" as those systems were not able to download "Death Magnetic".

According to a recent RollingStone.com report, the storyline of the game was the brainchild of the band's lead vocalist, James Hetfield. Players will begin the game opening for Metallica and eventually play as the band's members themselves. Much of the artwork for the game was designed by Pushead, the artist responsible for Metallica's album cover art. The game features signature on-stage moves from each band member; neither Jason Newsted or Cliff Burton appear in the game.
